Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home (SETI@Home)

OK - this is an excellent thing to get involved with! SETI has been searching the cosmos for decades looking for some kind of a sign that we're not alone.

A number of years ago they adopted the novel idea of giving away a screensaver to the public that would download a chuck of data collected from the Arecibo Radio Observatory and perform analysis to determine if there was a non-natural signal detected. The hook was that the user would become famous if their computer happened to be the one to discover an alien signal! (personally I think you've got a better chance with the lottery...)

Overall, it is a great way to put your idle computer to work towards a good cause!
